Bleeding in early pregnancy

Date added: 08/04/09

Heavy bleeding should not occur in any pregnancy but we are all witness to many women having light bleeding or a period about nine days after the egg has been fertilised. This bleeding is usually light and sometimes occurs at time of implantation.

Bleeding or spotting before 12 weeks is not necessarily a big problem. If the spotting or bleeding is accompanied by crampy abdominal pain I urge you to contact your physician as soon as possible, as this could be a sign of an early miscarriage. Sometimes spotting in early pregnancy can be due to a cervical ectropion, which occurs when the cells from the inner lining of the cervix extend outside the surface and they become inflamed. Bleeding can sometimes occur after sexual intercourse, as the cervix is much softer and more delicate during the pregnancy. Please do not be embarrassed to mention any spotting or vaginal bleeding.
